Behind the Brushstrokes
Our designed really evolved over the course of a few weeks due to several different factors... All three of us really came together with "agriculture" as our main idea. Miranda had the initial design with M Hill in the background; and that is essentially the piece of the original design that stuck. During the initial meetings we really liked the idea of an interactive element, so that changed the design. Then we ended up picking the wall with the bench that we were very excited to incorporate, but the texture of that particular wall also limited the amount of detail we thought we could achieve, so again that changed our design. So ultimately we simplified our design a bit, while also keeping aspects that "nodded" to both the ranchers and farmers that are close to our hearts and our community.
We chose bold color combinations to try to capture our favorite things about Nebraska in general, big sky with beautiful sunsets and thunderstorms, and the contrast of the prairie and crops. Then we just tried to bring those colors from the sky into the foreground with the prairie flowers to make the mural flow well together.
Incorporating M Hill was important to us because it's just such a staple to McCook itself and to us. Growing up we all attended high school together and ran in the same circle. We either lived near M Hill or had friends that we frequently ran around with south of town... M Hill just feels nostalgic and it feels like home. We hope our mural brings that feeling to anyone with similar stories or even those new to the community!
