ROOTED IN CARE

ADDRESS: North Off West D Street between Norris Ave and West 1st Street (Roots Apt)

Behind the Brushstrokes

This mural was created as a reflection of the values of Community Hospital in the new housing building. We created listening sessions with the hospital employees to get a thorough understanding of their vision for the hospital and the community. We created a design that reflected the values of care, compassion and community.

We chose a colorful sunrise scene to symbolize hope. The EKG line and medical cross are a nod to healthcare. The silhouettes represent a diversity of people caring for each other. I purposefully broke down some stereotypes. A male nurse holding a baby. A woman doctor caring for a little girl, both with the same ponytails- perhaps inspiring the little girl to become a doctor someday. The three figures in the center of two men supporting another man is particularly powerful to me. We don’t often see men being tender and nurturing with each other, and I wanted to normalize it in this mural.

We hope to engender a feeling of peace, compassion and potential with this mural, a reflection of the ROOTS program itself.
